“I’m from Scouts and we’re going door-to-door giving out light bulbs to save the world.”
If you’re a Fox Creek resident, you may well have heard that when you answered a boisterous knock on your door during the past week. Nicole Cross and her 1st Fox Creek Scouts have been busy delivering 750 Project Porchlight CFLs to homes throughout the town.
The group leader heard about our campaign in February and thought it was something that her Scouts could really get into. “To me Scouts is about the environment,” Nicole says. “We do tree planting… and bottle drives and things like and it was just one more thing that we could do to help out the environment. And the kids have been having fun doing it.”
On top of all that fun, says Nicole, the group members are becoming more aware of the impact they can have on the environment. “In the booklet that Jane (Baker, regional coordinator) gave me, there’s information about how using CFLs will save a lot of money and energy. That kind of thing piques the kids’ interest.”
Nicole loves seeing how enthusiastic the Scouts have been about Project Porchlight. And as for the particularly zealous Scout who’s keen to save the world? “I just laugh,” says Nicole. “I try to tell him, ‘We’re not saving the world; we’re just saving the environment.’”
