Not too long ago, Cindy Nielson logged in to her online Scrabble account, ready to make a play against her e-buddy Louise. Cindy was expecting a typical exchange with her long-time Scrabble friend. But she got more than she bargained for that day.
Louise filled Cindy in on Project Porchlight and told her that the campaign was coming to Rainbow Lake this February.
Cindy knew right away that she wanted to be involved. “I just thought that it was something that I could do,” she says. “I’d like to be doing something that is helping the environment. And I knew that there was nobody else in Rainbow Lake doing anything like this.”
So Cindy took on the entire residential side of Rainbow Lake. She went door-to-door to every house in town, delivering free CFLs. “It just felt good that I could do something,” she says.
As Cindy sees it, Project Porchlight is the beginning of a new era for Rainbow Lake. The town is only just beginning to start recycling and focusing on energy-conservation, she explains. Project Porchlight is the perfect way to open peoples’ eyes to the difference they can make on an individual level.
Not only that, says Cindy, but she much prefers the light from our energy-efficient bulbs compared with the light from incandescent bulbs. “I’ve been using CFLs for a long time,” she says. “I did see the difference in the light and I find that CFLs aren’t as hard on my eyes. I’m 47 and I wear glasses… and I find I’ve become very sensitive to things like that.”
Just what the doctor ordered to keep Cindy’s eagle eyes in top shape for future Scrabble matches!
