Press Releases
Project Porchlight, an award-winning energy-efficiency initiative brought to you by New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program ™ (NJCEP) and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) (BPU), distributed over 800 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs and spread its message that simple actions can make a big difference when it comes to helping the environment. Mayor Jay Springer, Eastampton Environmental Commissioners, and volunteers from the local Boy Scouts fanned out throughout the township educating their community about the energy savings offered by compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs as well as the energy efficiency programs that are available through New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program (NJCEP).
For Eastampton Environmental Commissioner Wendy Ford, organizer of the Blitz, the day was extremely rewarding. “Project Porchlight is amazing,” she says. “It really is a great, great program. I hope they will continue to do more of these. I don’t think that people realize the impact that CFL bulbs can have. When you go out and talk to people and tell them that if we all just change one light bulb in our houses, that’s like taking 800, 00 cars off the road, they are amazed. So then they might start thinking—‘Just think of the impact I could make if I recycled. Or, just think if I changed all the light bulbs in my house,”says Ms. Ford. By connecting with state residents one at a time, Project Porchlight empowers people to make smart choices that protect the environment. “I think education is the key to making our planet a greener place to live,” says Ms. Ford. “I myself, being an Environmental Commissioner, learned a lot from Project Porchlight. I didn’t know very much about CFL bulbs. I didn’t realize how much energy they save. I didn’t realize the positive impact they can have on the environment.”
Since 2008, Project Porchlight New Jersey has distributed more than 1,000,000 million compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to New Jersey residents, reached more than 300 New Jersey communities, registered and trained more than 2,600 volunteers, and created savings of 78 million for New Jersey residents on their electricity bill. As a result, New Jersey families and individuals are making smarter and better energy-efficient choices, realizing that their Simple Actions Matter™ in helping to protect the environment.
About Project Porchlight New Jersey
Project Porchlight is an award-winning energy-efficiency initiative of One Change, brought to you by New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program ™ (NJCEP) and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) as part of the Green New Jersey Resource Team. The Green New Jersey Resource Team is a new initiative that will provide resources to communities across New Jersey to distribute ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs and educate residents about how to save energy and money and help protect the environment with energy-efficient lighting. The Project Porchlight campaign brings together volunteers from local businesses, community groups, and the government to deliver energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs across the state. Energy-saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, last up to 5 to 7 years longer, and can help residents save approximately $30 or more in energy costs over the life of each bulb. Information about proper disposal of compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs can be found at www.earth911.org.
