South Jersey Local News (Shamong, NJ): Volunteers sought for ‘Project Porchlight Bulb Blitz’
Volunteers! Adults, teens or even younger! You’re needed for a civic project here on Saturday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It’s all for Project Porchlight — A Bulb Blitz.
You’ve never heard of it? Here’s what it’s all about. Anyone interested in helping should show up at Indian Mills United Methodist Church at the above date and time.
The idea is to hand out one free, energy-saving, compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb, hopefully to every home in the township. The idea is to publicize the advantages of the CFL bulbs. They save both energy and cash.
The bulbs are costlier at the time of purchase, but are estimated to last at least five times longer than the standard light bulbs Thomas Edison invented that we’ve been using for the past century.
The event is sponsored by the state Board of Public Utilities and the New Jersey Clean EnergyNew Jersey Clean Energy Project.
Once volunteers arrive at the church, they’re given about 30 minutes of training, a supply of bulbs, a map and volunteer t-shirt, information and training tips. Then they pair up (for safety reasons) and start going door-to-door to hand out the bulbs.
Distribution is expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes.
After the bulbs have been given away, volunteers return to the church and exchange experiences over a free lunch. A tally of all the bulbs distributed is compiled as well as residents’ responses to the program.
There will be music, certificates for the volunteers and an opportunity to sign a “Bulbometer” poster, which will be given to the township as a memento of the project.
Shamong thus joins a growing list of towns that show the state that “Simple Actions Matter.”
