News From Downtown Highstown (Highstown, NJ): Don't Miss These Upcoming Events! Project Porchlight
Posted August 5, 2010 by OneChange

The Hightstown Environmental Commission and Project Porchlight are seeking volunteers to help deliver free compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs throughout the community at a special event scheduled for Saturday August 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funding for the bulb distribution is provided by Project Porchlight, a grassroots energy efficiency program that encourages people to switch from old fashioned incandescent light bulbs to new energy efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Volunteers will receive breakfast, a t-shirt and button, free training, a map and a bag of CFL bulbs to deliver to their neighbors in Hightstown.

After deliveries are completed, volunteers are invited to return to the Squad Room at 168 Bank Street in Hightstown for a light lunch and to share their experiences. Those interested in taking part can register until Wednesday, August 4th by contacting Vicky Allen at vicky.allen(at)porchlight.org or (609) 392-1650 or Barbara Jones at docjones920(at)msn.com.

Last year, the Hightstown Borough Council passed a resolution in support of Hightstown becoming a "Sustainable Jersey" community. Since then, the Hightstown Environmental Commission has been working to develop plans, implement programs and assist with educational opportunities that support the creation of a sustainable community. To achieve "sustainable community" certification, towns work to accumulate 150 points by completing required and optional tasks, each worth 10 to 40 points. In addition, participating municipalities must complete four priority actions. From there, municipalities can select from a number of elective actions for implementation based on what is most appropriate for their town. Hightstown will earn up to 10 points in the Sustainable Jersey process for the CFL distribution.
