Red Deer Advocate (Red Deer, AB): Calgary Tower goes green; changes to green-coloured compact fluorescent bulbs
One of Calgary's most prominent landmarks has gone green.
The exterior lights on the Calgary Tower are changing colour permanently - they were changed to green-coloured compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Organizers say the new bulbs will save the tower $12,000 and cut 104 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the air.
The greening of the tower on Sunday was the grand finale to a two-year project aimed at making Alberta more environmentally friendly.
Dozens of buses began arriving at the Tower late Sunday afternoon, carrying volunteers who participated in Project Porchlight, a two-year campaign to deliver compact fluorescent light bulbs to homes and business across the province.
More than 800,000 bulbs were handed out.
To celebrate the achievement, volunteers who made the project happen, along with honoured guests, were invited to a private party at the Telus Convention Centre.
Scientists say replacing just one bulb will reduce energy costs because it uses 75-80 per cent less energy and lasts longer.
Project Porchlight was sponsored by the non-profit organization, One Change.
