Jenkinson’s Aquarium [1] in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, is a fun place to visit during the summer. Along with its state-of-the-art aquarium, the complex features children’s shows and amusement park rides. Jenkinson’s also presents a fireworks display on Thursday evenings.

On August 12, there was an added attraction: Project Porchlight was on hand to educate folks about the energy savings offered by compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs as well as the energy efficiency programs that are available through New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program (NJCEP) [2].

A total of 52 CFL bulbs were distributed that evening, part of Project Porchlight New Jersey’s campaign to distribute energy-efficient light bulbs to residents across the state. Project Porchlight is an initiative of One Change [3], and the campaign is made possible thanks to funding by the state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) [4] and NJCEP [5].

Jenkinson’s Aquarium Director Cindy Claus was pleased to host Project Porchlight. “A lot of people still don’t understand that CFL bulbs conserve energy,” says Cindy. “So having Project Porchlight out there educating the public about the importance of using CFL bulbs is a great thing.”

CFL bulbs use up to 75 percent less energy than old-fashioned incandescent bulbs. Choosing CFL bulbs means lower costs, reduced demand for electricity, and, ultimately, less pollution.

Less pollution means a cleaner and safer environment for ocean wildlife. “Having Project Porchlight here is great for our visitors because they understand that yes, we enjoy these animals, and now we’re learning about how important it is to protect their environment,” says Cindy. “We all can help do that by conserving our resources.”

When it comes to protecting our environment, simple actions really do matter! Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can make a difference. By connecting with state residents one at a time, Project Porchlight is empowering people of all backgrounds to make smart, energy-efficient choices that protect the environment.

“Being able to present a CFL bulb to people to take home and try is really useful,” says Cindy. “It’s important to educate and empower people. Even the staff here has learned a lot from Project Porchlight!”
