For Judy Ann Bergvall (pictured here), contributing to her community isn’t a choice; it’s an obligation. “Volunteering is important,” says the Olympia, WA resident. “We all have a responsibility to give back in whatever way we can. We all are responsible for making our communities better places to live.”
Judy Ann is definitely a woman who practices what she preaches. She’s a devoted volunteer and long-time member of Lions Clubs International [1]. “The Lions are the world's largest service organization,” she says. “There are Lions clubs in approximately 200 countries and geographical areas.”
As District C Environment Chair for the Lacey Sunrise Lions [2], Judy Ann has a special interest in protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness among her fellow members. When she learned that Project Porchlight was coming to her area, she encouraged her club to get involved.
“I wanted the Lions to participate because it was a hands-on project we could do,” she says. The members answered her call loud and clear; they came out in full force for Project Porchlight partner Puget Sound Energy [3]’s Rock the Bulb campaign [4] events in Olympia on October 31 and November 1. The Lions were kept on their toes all weekend, helping the long lines of Olympia residents choose the right compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs for their fixtures, and ensuring that everyone understood how to use the energy-saving light bulbs properly.
Judy Ann is proud of what her members accomplished. By coming together to volunteer for Project Porchlight, she says, the club “proved that when there's a need, the Lions come through every time.” That’s a lesson she hopes the entire community of Puget Sound takes to heart. “If each and every one of us does just one small thing, we can all protect our environment.”
