It’s official—the compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb has arrived in the city of Renton, WA! On July 7, approximately 40 volunteers pulled on their green t-shirts and joined the Project Porchlight Puget Sound team at the Highlands Neighborhood Center. We were also honored by the presence of four local dignitaries: Renton City Council members Rich Zwicker and King Parker, Renton Mayor Denis Law, and King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn (pictured here from left to right).

Councilmember Dunn helped get everyone into the blitz spirit by speaking about the benefits of using our energy-efficient light bulbs. “There are many reasons to switch to using CFL bulbs,” he says. “Whether you choose to use them because they are good for the environment, or because they save money, or even because they are a step toward energy independence, it’s a positive choice for any Washingtonian to make.”

Inspired by the opening remarks, our volunteers enthusiastically went through an orientation session before heading out to deliver CFL bulbs—and the message that simple actions matter—throughout Renton’s Highlands neighborhood. At the end of the day, our outstanding volunteers had given out nearly 1,000 free energy-saving light bulbs.

The Project Porchlight team couldn’t have been happier with the days’ events. But we weren’t the only ones who were impressed. City of Renton Mayor Denis Law [1] had some very kind words to share with us: “I’m glad to be working with such great partners—Project Porchlight and Puget Sound Energy [2]—to share the message about the importance of energy conservation with the Renton community. Today’s event is a wonderful way to kick off this effort.”

Washington state’s oldest local energy utility, Puget Sound Energy [3] serves more than 1 million electric customers and nearly 750,000 natural gas customers in 11 counties.
