David Kobek recently finished overseeing the delivery of 2,100 CFLs throughout Grant MacEwan College [1] College, and one of the first things he wants to know is whether Project Porchlight will be back again soon. “It was really fun,” says the fourth-year Business Management student. “It’s a great reason to talk to pretty much anybody on campus. And it’s a great cause so everybody gets into it.”
David organized the bulb blitz at his school through the Students’ Association [2]’s Sustainability Service, for which he is the Sustainability Coordinator. He and a team of eight volunteers spread out across campus to distribute light bulbs to every student and faculty member they could.
“I went into Business because I wanted to do something like this,” says David. “I wanted to get into environmental issues.”
But before he graduates, David has a few other things planned for Sustainability Service. In February, he’s going to hold Leave No Trace, a sustainability-themed week in which students will be encouraged to leave all their recyclables in the appropriate bin—even if it means carrying that bottle or can a few extra blocks. “We’re trying to get student participation,” he says. “Even something as small as recycling a bottle or changing a light bulb, it all contributes to sustaining our planet and brings us one step closer to beating climate change.”
