Amy Strachan has made a lifelong commitment to preparing today’s youth for the future. During work hours, that means teaching Grade 2 students at Fort Nelson’s Chalo School. In the evenings and on weekends, that means leading the First Northern Rockies Girl Guides [1]. And all day, everyday, that means doing what she can to reduce her carbon footprint.

“I never leave lights on in a room I’m not in,” says Amy. “I believe it’s important to use as little as you can so that there is always some left for tomorrow.”

When Amy met the North Eastern BC Project Porchlight team at the Fort Nelson Whatchamacallit craft fair this September, she offered to lead her Girl Guides [2] in delivering CFLs throughout the community. They went door-to-door in early October handing out most of their bulbs, and distributed the rest when they went trick-or-treating on Halloween. “In the Girl Guides [3] Association, we focus a lot on renewable resources, conserving energy, and alternate means of energy production,” says Amy. “This project fit right in with the way our girls want the world to be.”
