If you can change a light bulb, you can make a difference.

That’s one of the underlying messages of the Project Porchlight campaign, designed to mobilize people everywhere to take advantage of the many benefits of switching to energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.

Project Porchlight Saskatchewan, brought to the province by SaskPower Eneraction, was kicked off today with a CFL light bulb giveaway event on the F.W. Hill Mall in Regina that featured the Hon. Bill Hutchinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs; Pat Youzwa, President and CEO of SaskPower; Stuart Hickox, Executive Director of One Change; and Saskatchewan Roughrider players Mike Abou-Mechrek and Luca Congi, who are helping to promote the campaign.

Through the campaign, more than 200,000 free CFL bulbs will be delivered across the province this fall. The kickoff participants appealed for volunteers from across Saskatchewan to deliver the bulbs door to door in their own neighbourhoods in urban residential areas and at local community events in rural areas of the province.

“This campaign is one of the tangible projects to which the Saskatchewan Party is committed. It reminds each of us that we play a part in improving and protecting the environment,” Minister of Municipal Affairs, Bill Hutchinson said. “Green is the colour in Saskatchewan. I am confident the people of this province will want to help make the province even greener this fall!”

“Saving power, saving money and helping to protect the environment is what SaskPower Eneraction is all about,” SaskPower President and CEO Pat Youzwa said. “Lighting accounts for about 21 per cent of an average household power bill, so switching to energy efficient CFL bulbs is really one of the smartest investments you can make.”

Project Porchlight is run by One Change, a not-for-profit organization that promotes environmental sustainability. “This is about more than light bulbs. Project Porchlight converts awareness to action at the community level and makes it possible for everyone to be part of the long-term solution to climate change. We start by encouraging everyone to make a simple change that leads to others, and to be a light in their own community,” One Change Executive Director Stuart Hickox said.
