This past Saturday, July 26, the Porchlight Vermont team hit the streets of Burlington's Old Northend to participate in The Ramble. This annual event in Burlington has evolved over the past five years from a simple art show to a 'free-for-all' celebration of creativity and community. The Ramble provides an opportunity for friends and families to actively participate in bike parades, art galleries, community gardens, block parties, yard sales, field games, live music, and much more.
With green Porchlight bags slung over our shoulders we set out to spread the word on energy savings and environmental consciousness. We found that many Old Northenders were already using CFLs but were eager to learn more about them. In addition to the 250 bulbs we passed out, we also shared very important information on CFL disposal and recycling. Community members were excited to learn that there were many nearby spots to recycle spent bulbs, and we were more than keyed up to deliver the message.
As we looped back through the Ramble 'hot spots,' we could see the ripple effect that was taking place as a result of our initial one-on-one conversations. For such a small community, Burlington's Old Northend clearly has a gigantic heart. You can just feel the energy that they exude, and now you can see it glowing from the CFLs in their houses, too ;-)
