Crowsnest Pass is about to shine much brighter, thanks to Jenice Smith, Program Manager at the Crowsnest Conservation Society. The organization came on board with Project Porchlight this spring and has been busy handing out CFLs ever since.

“We focus on different issues, one being increasing the conservation ethic in the community,” says Jenice. “(Project Porchlight) seemed like a good fit as far as getting people to make a small change in their household, as well as increasing environmental awareness.”

Throughout June and July, Jenice has overseen the distribution of 750 light bulbs. She and other staff members hit up several local events, including the cancer relay and Canada Day festivities. Jenice has welcomed the opportunity to talk to people about conserving energy and give them the power to make a difference.

“We wanted to encourage the community to make positive choices for the environment within the home, out in the community and into the surrounding wild places,” says Jenice. “I love being outside, and I place a high value on nature and want to see that it’s conserved for future generations.”

This Saturday, July 19th, Jenice will hand out the remaining 150 bulbs as part of the Rum Runner Festival. She’ll be perched outside the Crowsnest Conservation Society at 12707-20th Ave, Main Street, so stop by to say hello and pick up your free CFL. And while you’re at it, stick around for the spectacular fireworks display over the mountains; it’s the perfect way to light up your night.
