Project Porchlight hits Whitecourt

Last weekend, Project Porchlight regional coordinator Lynn Lau spent some time getting to know the folks in Whitecourt, the Snowmobile Capital of Alberta! There were no snowmobiles in sight when Lynn arrived on May 9th; only budding trees and blooming flowers. With help from her fellow Porchlighters, she set up camp at the Whitecourt Trade Fair, decking out the booth with a table skirt and banner.

The event attracted 4,500 attendees, including several dignitaries. Whitecourt-Ste. Anne MLA George VanderBurg and Yellowhead MP Rob Merrifield (photographed here) stopped by our booth to say hello. MP Merrifield says he had special orders from Stephen Harper to pay us a visit. Woodlands County councillors Dan Pritchard and Daryl Yagos, as well as Whitecourt Town ouncillor Williard Strebchuk, also made time to chat and find out what we're all about.

After a successful wrap, which included signing up 24 volunteers to distribute CFLs throughout Whitecourt, we asked Lynn what the highlights of the trade fair were for her:

1. Discovering how energy-savvy the people of Whitecourt are; the vast majority of people who visited us said they'd already started using CFLs.

2. Meeting the incredibly enthusiastic new volunteers.

3. Taking a walk along the lovely Beaver Creek trail.

And, last but not least,

4. Dining at the marvellous Mountain Pizza and Steak House.
