Project Porchlight British Columbia

Simple Actions Matter in British Columbia!

In the summer and fall of 2008, more than 500 enthusiastic volunteers, with the generous support of BC Hydro Power Smart and EnCana Corporation, helped the Project Porchlight team successfully distribute more than 20,000 free compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to residents door-to-door and at more than 50 community events across Northeastern British Columbia.

During a successful 16-week campaign, Project Porchlight was able to reach thousands of residents in more than 15 communities throughout the Northeastern region of British Columbia, including:

  • Blueberry River First Nations
  • Chetwynd
  • Dawson Creek
  • Fort Nelson
  • Fort St. John
  • Halfway River First Nation
  • Hudson’s Hope
  • Kelly Lake First Nations
  • Pouce Coupe
  • Saulteau First Nations
  • Taylor
  • Tomslake
  • Tumbler Ridge
  • West Moberly Lake First Nations
  • Wonowon
  • Residents of these communities were empowered to believe that simple actions matter and to make smart energy choices in their daily lives.
    20,000 bulbs changed means:

    • 1,000,000 kWh of electricity reduced
    • $700,000 in energy saved
    • 500 tonnes of greenhouse gas cut

That’s equivalent to taking more than 100 cars off B.C. roads for a year! Congratulations, B.C.!

    B.C. Highlights

The success of the B.C. campaign is owed to the enthusiastic communities throughout the Northeastern region of B.C., the network of dedicated volunteers and the active participation and support of our funders. Each community embraced the Project Porchlight team, and collectively moved forward to reduce their energy consumption.

You can find highlights of this successful campaign, including profiles of star volunteers, short narratives of exciting local events we participated in, as well as stories from the field on our British Columbia community-specific web pages.

Project Porchlight British Columbia in the News!

In print, on the radio, and over the Internet, Project Porchlight was “all the buzz” in Northeastern B.C. Throughout the campaign Project Porchlight was highlighted in the media over 14 times, helping us spread our positive message of energy conservation to thousands of B.C. residents.
