Porchlight lives it up at EcoLiving Fair

There was no getting past Project Porchlight at the 2008 EcoLiving Fair, Calgary’s one-stop shop for sustainable products and sustainable living solutions. On September 27th, we staked out a prime spot at the trade show floor entrance and introduced ourselves to everyone who crossed our path.

Maureen Sywolos delivers on her promise

Maureen Sywolos remembers the first time she heard about Project Porchlight. Regional coordinator Jane Baker had travelled to Tumbler Ridge this July to introduce the campaign and announce plans to expand to North Eastern BC. Maureen heard the presentation and was interested in getting involved, but was too busy to volunteer at the time.

Volunteers and other VIPs light up Fort St. John launch

It was an afternoon of VIPs at the Fort St. John, BC launch on October 4th.

Our entire North Eastern BC team came out to the Totem Mall to greet and train over 50 volunteers!

Project Porchlight does double-duty in Tumbler Ridge

The self-invite. Presumptuous, maybe, but that doesn’t mean it’s without merit. Project Porchlight regional coordinator Jane Baker used it to her advantage on October 2nd when she crashed the Tumbler Ridge Community Arts Council meeting right after talking to the Tumbler Ridge Lions Club.

CFLs steal limelight at Farmers Market

We were a huge hit at Edmonton’s Original Downtown Farmers Market last Saturday, September 27th. Proudly sporting our bright green fleeces—which always draw attention—we were able to chat people up as they passed by, browsing the stands for jewellery, clothing and fresh produce.

Mayor Lenore Harwood gets behind Porchlight

You can count Hudson’s Hope Mayor Lenore Harwood as one of the people who’s thrilled that Project Porchlight came to town. She’s been waiting for our arrival since she first heard about us at the 2007 Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference. “I live in a community that has two hydro dams,” says Mayor Harwood.

Stephen Avenue—a one-way street to green

Even rush hour can be green when Project Porchlight is involved. We hit up the heavily-populated Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary this Monday during the busiest rush hour of all: lunchtime! We handed out 300 free bulbs as people rushed in and out of restaurants, galleries, cafés and stores.

Porchlight slides into Kelly Lake

Last Friday, September 26th, while some Canadian women were donning high heels and preparing for a night on the town, Cherie Stocken and Jane Baker tugged on their best rubber boots and slogged through several kilometres of mud. That’s right folks—vanity comes second to the environment for Project Porchlight staff.
