Whitehorse lightbulb quest
Posted by Stuart | February 12, 2007

How many light bulbs does it take to change the Yukon? 10,000.
How many does it take to save $50. One.

Drop by the Visitor Information Centre tomorrow (Tuesday) at 4 PM to be among the first to get a free Project Porchlight compact fluorescent bulb (CFL).

Project Porchlight is a national not-for-profit campaign that's based on a remarkable statistic: If every household in Canada replaced just one old fashioned incandescent bulb with a CFL, the reduction in pollution would be like taking 66,000 cars off Canadian roads. And because compact fluroescents use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, every bulb changed generates $50 in energy savings over its lifetime.

With the support of the Energy Solutions Centre, Project Porchlight is distributing 10,000 free CFLs door-to-door in the Yukon. That's $500,000 in energy savings!

The campaign harnesses the power of person-to-person communication. Porchlight appeals for volunteers to "light up your street" by delivering bulbs to friends and neighbours. Teams of volunteers go out with a shoulder bags of 50 bulbs and engage people at the door about how to save money and take action on climate change. Every change counts!

Please come to the launch event. We're changing the Yukon, one bulb at a time. And Canada's watching.
