Stage is set for Project Porchlight Calgary Launch Event
Posted by Josh | October 15, 2008

The stage is set. The band is ready to play. The coffee and hot chocolate are warm. And the food is fresh. Now all we need is you!

Join the Project Porchlight team at Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary as we launch our campaign throughout the city. The festivities take place on Friday, October 17, from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, with speeches starting at noon.

Calgary’s own Mocking Shadows will be performing their critically-acclaimed soul/funk/R&B-fusion tunes live on stage, and Alex Ruiz, the host of CBC's Living Calgary, will be our guest MC. We will have several guest speakers including: Dave Rodney, MLA for Calgary-Lougheed; Brian Pincott, Deputy Mayor of Calgary; David L. Day, Director of Environmental and Safety Programs with the City of Calgary; Lois Wozney, Advisor for Community Energy Efficiency Programs with EnCana Corporation; and Stuart Hickox, Executive Director of Project Porchlight.

"After its incredible success throughout the rest of Alberta, we are very excited for Project Porchlight to come to Calgary," says Campaign Manager, Scott Payne. "Now it’s our turn to show Alberta and the rest of Canada that Calgary residents care about the environment and are ready to prove that simple actions matter."

This fall, volunteers with Project Porchlight will distribute 168,000 free compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs at events and door to door throughout Calgary. These bulbs will provide residents with almost $8 million dollars in electricity savings and cut over 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s equivalent to taking more than 12,000 cars off the road for a year! This is because CFL bulbs use 75% less electricity to produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb and last up to 10 times longer.

"We are very excited to have so many special guests attending," continued Scott. "Join us for some great music and tasty treats. And our incredible Project Porchlight staff and volunteers will be on hand to distribute free CFL bulbs and information."
