Project Porchlight could not have chosen a better venue to unofficially launch its campaign in Red Deer, Red Deer County, and Central Alberta, than Red Deer's Family Day WinterFest 2008. Matt, Kathy, Garry, and Brian from Project Porchlight's Calgary office attended.
This past Sunday, February 17th, an estimated 4,500 people attended The City of Red Deer's WinterFest 2008 as part of Family Day weekend in Alberta. Project Porchlight was on hand to spread the message that saving money, conserving natural resources, and helping the environment can start with simple actions like changing a light bulb.
And spread the message they did. Not to mention 800 bulbs to enthusiastic, friendly, and engaging residents of Red Deer.
Red Deer's Family Day WinterFest was held at Bower Ponds where participants took in skating, boot hockey, jam can curling, nature crafts, art, and an interactive human powered light bulb display that allows participant to appreciate how much more energy is required to light an old-fashioned incandescent light bulb versus an energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulb.
Organisers and attendees alike warmly embraced our environmental theme and our Porchlight colours. They especially like our toques and many people wondered how they get one. Advised to sign up to volunteer and deliver bulbs to their neighbours, 12 people did just that! We need many more - volunteers that is - and we have a toque for you if you'll be a Porchlight volunteer in you Red Deer neighbourhood.
Brian received a call from Tamara at radio stations The Drive and Big 105 FM and conducted an interview. CKGY and Z99 FM (ZED) have generously been running our PSAs over the past week and Brian did an interview with Wendy there a few days ago. Tamara was interested in the energy savings and said she learned recently about the energy savings from using new Tide Coldwater. Tamara says they've been running the PSAs at The Drive and Big 105 too! Rolf's voice is now famous in Central Alberta.
Manon is happy to learn there were many Francophones at WinterFest today - French was like Savoir Faire - everywhere. It was tres bon! Some were just there with their families taking in the tobogganing while others were instrumental in the cabane à sucre; quelle surprise!
Not only are there Francophones in Central Alberta, but yes Manon, there is a Liberal in Red Deer. Two, and then some. We had separate visits from Diane Kubanek the Liberal candidate for Red Deer South and Richard Farrand the Liberal candidate for Red Deer North - both part of the Taft team. They love our campaign.
After the event Brian dropped into the Superstore, still in Porchlight gear and glowing for the excitement of the day and the warmth of the generous Alberta sun - he did have a +15 on for the event - and the cashier recognised Project Porchlight from The Red Deer Advocate - our ad for volunteers ran in today's edition and it's been spotted! Good work Lee-Ann.
Yesterday, Matt, Kathy, and Garry (Scott Payne was there too!) had a windy day at Sylvan Lake, which keep the turn out low. Nonetheless, they successfully gained four volunteers to champion the campaign in the area.
Project Porchlight has great exposure in Red Deer and Central Alberta - we have tremendous momentum now on which to build. People support our campaign because it off an opportunity to take action to reduce energy consumption and the savings are appealing too! What's your One Change Red Deer? Maybe it's installing your new energy efficient CFL bulb you receive from Project Porchlight? How about taking it one step further - how about an hour or two of your time - select the Get Involved tab from the Project Porchlight homepage, register now, take a bag of 50 or 100 bulbs to deliver to folks you know on your street to be a part of the vision to get one CFL bulb to every household in Canada.
