Project Porchlight Keeps Green Movement Strong at Lawrence, NJ Bulb Blitz
Posted by OneChange | June 24, 2010

The township of Lawrence, New Jersey is known for its commitment to going green. Just visit the Sustainable Lawrence website and you’ll see where that reputation comes from. Many area residents, businesses, congregations and other organizations have joined forces to encourage the people of Lawrence Township to practice sustainability in their everyday lives.

Among the many useful and environmentally friendly tips and services Sustainable Lawrence provides is a list of seven easy steps people can take to save money and protect the environment. In the top three on that list? Replacing old-fashioned light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.

Project Porchlight was thrilled at the opportunity to make a contribution to the community’s outstanding efforts to protect the environment. “Residents and institutions in Lawrence Township had already gotten people on the path to making smart and sustainable choices,” says Project Porchlight Communications Clerk Victoria Dykes. “We were there to reinforce those choices, and give people one of the tools they need to continue going green—the CFL bulb.”

Victoria was just part of the Project Porchlight team that helped deliver free energy-saving light bulbs throughout the township. We had a fantastic volunteer turnout for the June 5 Bulb Blitz, including many students from the local Lawrence High School (pictured here). “It’s always inspiring to see young people wanting to make a difference,” says Victoria. “Their energy is infectious, and makes you want to keep going and doing more for the environment.”

Together with the students and other volunteers, our staff delivered nearly 900 free energy saving light bulbs door-to-door. The Bulb Blitz was part of Project Porchlight New Jersey’s campaign to distribute energy-efficient light bulbs to residents across the state. Project Porchlight is an initiative of One Change, and the campaign is made possible thanks to funding by the state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program (NJCEP).
