July 24 turned out to be one of the hottest days so far this summer in Little Silver, New Jersey, but the soaring temperatures did little to deter the dedicated volunteers who participated in Project Porchlight’s Little Silver Blitz.
Despite the heat, approximately 25 volunteers worked their way through the borough, educating their friends and neighbors about the energy savings offered by compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs as well as the energy efficiency programs that are available through New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program (NJCEP).
A total of 727 CFL bulbs were distributed that day, part of Project Porchlight New Jersey’s campaign to distribute energy-efficient light bulbs to residents across the state. Project Porchlight is an initiative of One Change, and the campaign is made possible thanks to funding by the state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and theNJCEP.
Little Silver Environmental Commissioner Rosemary Brewer was pleased to team up with Project Porchlight. “I think Project Porchlight really has a great concept,” says Rosemary. “If everybody does their part, it’s so much more helpful than nobody doing anything.”
When it comes to protecting our environment, simple actions really do matter! Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can make a difference. By connecting with state residents one at a time, Project Porchlight is empowering people of all backgrounds to make smart, energy-efficient choices that protect the environment.
“Just getting people exposed to the fact that they, as an individual, can make an impact will get them thinking about making other changes,” says Rosemary. “We can get people to understand that they can conserve energy by doing a lot of simple things—switching their light bulbs, walking a little more, buying locally, re-using cloth bags, and so on. And if we can get people to start thinking in a sustainable manner, these ideas will catch on.”
