It was a double header on Saturday, February 2nd in Okotoks-a morning launch at the Recreation Centre and a public engagement event at Centennial Arena. About 15 registered volunteers and upwards of 60 members of the public joined Deputy Mayor Beth Kish and Porchlight staff - Scott, John, and Forrest to officially get the campaign underway in Okotoks and the Foothills. They were joined by another Foothills representative, Mayor Ivor McCorquindale, of the Village of Longview. Many people in attendance heard about Project Porchlight thanks to some great folks at Golden West Radio stations - The Eagle 100.9 FM, AM 1140 CHRB, and Sun Country FM. The Eagle featured our campaign on The Morning Show on Friday and we were in the news Saturday morning - so residents had a chance to learn about our events for Saturday and our project. Following the motivational statements and orientation, Porchlighters descended on Okotoks for bulb distribution.
Matt and Brian joined the Porchlight contingent for the Okotoks Oilers (AJHL) game. Scott brought the Porchlight lamp out to centre ice where Oilers Captain Jesse Perrin flicked the switch to symbolically announce the arrival of Project Porchlight in Okotoks. We were well received by fans at the Oilers and many kids and adults dropped by to try out our "crank" - the human powered generator-to see for themselves how much more energy they needed to produce to light the incandescent bulb versus the energy efficient CFL. We are grateful to Okotoks Oilers marketing manager Greg Davenport and Dwan Lemaistre, administrative assistant for welcoming us and letting Scott venture out on to the ice with lamp in hand! It is support like this that takes Project Porchlight to the people. The announcements, advising patrons about our campaign and the benefits of CFLs were helpful too.
