Thanks to tremendous community support in Kent, WA, Project Porchlight staff and volunteers were pumped and ready to rock for the Kent Bulb Blitz on September 30. Mayor Suzette Cooke (pictured here) kicked things off with an energetic, inspirational talk about the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. Then our spirits were lifted even higher by the Kentridge High School cheerleading squad who came by to show their support.
“We had a fantastic turnout,” says Project Porchlight Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator Justin Calhoun. “There was a record number of volunteers, and we distributed a record number of compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs for a neighborhood blitz.”
The final tally was a whopping 720 energy-saving light bulbs distributed door-to-door throughout Kent! As always, we owe a thank you to our partner, Puget Sound Energy, for making Project Porchlight happen throughout the Puget Sound area. And we owe an extra big THANK YOU to our amazing volunteers who made the day such a spectacular success. In addition to Mayor Cooke and the Kentridge High School students, we had support from an Honors Class at Kent Phoenix Academy, students from Kentwood High School, and a group of employees from Best Buy.
The Kent volunteers made a big impression on Project Porchlight staff, and—more importantly—a big difference in the lives of their neighbors. Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work, their community will be saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions for years to come.
