Mayor Susan Samson keeps Sylvan Lake shining bright
Posted by Amanda | April 29, 2008

One of the best aspects of living in Sylvan Lake, says Mayor Susan Samson, is being so close to the water. Not only does it lend a natural beauty to the town, but it also serves as a daily reminder to respect the environment and help keep Sylvan Lake green.

Mayor Samson is a huge advocate of taking responsibility and doing what it takes to save energy. "Part of my election platform dealt with stewardship and the environment," she says.

When Project Porchlight came to her town, she and co-worker Nellie Melnyk thought it was a perfect way of engaging Sylvan Lake residents. It was simple, says Mayor Samson, but effective.

Nellie jumped in with both feet and wasted no time recruiting volunteers. People of all ages stepped up to deliver the free CFLs throughout their neighbourhoods. "We were impressed by how many parents and children got involved," says Mayor Samson.

The mayor also challenged some of her fellow councilors to get involved in Project Porchlight, and was happy to see them walking through the town, green bags in hand. "What better way to speak with citizens," says Mayor Samson, "and at the same time promote a green initiative that is near and dear to all our hearts?"
