As both Mayor of Essex and a mail carrier for Canada Post Corporation, Ron McDermott figured he still didn't have enough on his plate. So he signed on as a Project Porchlight volunteer this fall.

His thorough knowledge of the Essex neighbourhoods came in handy as he and several members of the E.L.K. Energy Inc. board delivered "dozens and dozens" of CFLs throughout the town. "We distributed the bulbs and tried to get people to change," he says.

Mayor McDermott also purchased several CFLs to replace all the bulbs in his house.

He plans to continue spreading the good word about energy conservation in the hope that everyone in Essex and its neighboring municipalities will get on board with Project Porchlight. "Any time we can do anything to save our resources, we should do it."
