Hundreds of school-age children and their parents turned out for the East Orange Earth Day celebration on April 22 in East Orange, New Jersey. There was much to celebrate that afternoon at City Hall, namely the accomplishments of the Department of Public Works (DPW) Clean & Green Environmental Education Center (C&GEEC) as well as the 10 local schools that participated in East Orange’s Environmental Ambassador Program

The Bloomfield Harvest Fest held on September 19 & 20 in Bloomfield, New Jersey, featured plenty of vendors, carnival rides and children’s games. The event, which attracted approximately 1,000 people, was also an opportunity for the Greener Bloomfield Committee to reach out to township residents to inform them about ways of making Bloomfield more sustainable.

Thousands of folks enjoyed the Nutley Street Fair in Nutley, New Jersey, on September 6. The weather was beautiful, and the fair offered plenty of vendors and family activities. This year’s event also featured a new attraction: Project Porchlight was on hand to inspire and educate fairgoers about energy-saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.

Temperatures that soared well into the 90s didn’t deter the intrepid volunteers who turned out for Project Porchlight’s Bloomfield Blitz on August 15 in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Despite the heat, 40 volunteers helped Project Porchlight deliver energy-saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to their neighbors.

United States Army Private First Class Derek Hernandez, (pictured here) learned a lot about his community when he was thousands of miles away from his hometown of Bloomfield, New Jersey. While Derek served in Iraq and Kuwait, he received care packages from Bloomfield Mayor Raymond McCarthy, the township’s council, the police and fire departments, and city hall employees.

The 4th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival, held on July 24-26 in Newark, New Jersey, celebrated some of the city’s favorite musical genres--gospel, house and hip-hop. The event featured performances by world-class artists, including
