Auburn, WA Residents Protect their Environment with Project Porchlight
Posted by Amanda | October 7, 2009

Taking care of their environment is important to the residents of Auburn, WA. And they more than proved it at the city’s 3rd Annual Disaster Preparedness Fair on Saturday, September 26. Nearly 1,000 people came out to Les Gove Community Campus to take part in the event, which was held by the City of Auburn Emergency Management Office as part of National Disaster Preparedness month. Project Porchlight joined the other vendors at the Fair to do our part in helping Auburn preserve and protect its environment.

“There were lots of vendors with information about how to prepare for floods, fires, hazardous waste, and other environmental disasters that could pose a risk to citizens of Auburn,” says Project Porchlight Events Coordinator Anna Cronin. “People were really getting into the activities. There was sand bag training and even a flood plain demonstration by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

Those weren’t the only activities available! The Project Porchlight booth was up and running, and residents from Auburn, Kent and Federal Way had a great time trying their hands at our crank. “Hundreds of people stopped by to see firsthand how much energy they could save using our compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs,” says Project Porchlight Call Center Representative Krista Seabrook (pictured here explaining our campaign to Fair attendees). “People were really excited when they heard what we’ve been up to, and to learn about partner Puget Sound Energy’s upcoming Rock the Bulb campaign events.”

The Fair goers did more than just get excited. By day’s end, we’d given out 650 free energy-efficient light bulbs and signed up 18 volunteers for future events. We were proud to be involved in the Fair and to have the opportunity to meet so many community-minded citizens. Clearly, the city of Auburn understands that simple actions matter.
